AstraZeneca has been sued in a multidistrict litigation over alleged price fixing and price fixing by the Canadian pharmaceutical industry.
The lawsuit was brought in U. S. District Court in the District of Connecticut, where the suit was filed in 2009.
The case is set to go to trial in March 2010.
“The pharmaceutical industry is using this class action to pursue and hold these companies accountable for price fixing and price fixing fixing by the Canadian drug industry,” said Richard G. Schmitt, U. attorney for the District of Connecticut, in a news release.
“The case was filed in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) to prevent the industry from settling a class action for price fixing and price fixing of AstraZeneca’s cholesterol drug Crestor. In addition, the case was filed in a class action in which AstraZeneca had a right to share the estimated $1.8 billion it spent on research to develop and sell Crestor. The settlement agreement between AstraZeneca and the industry does not prohibit the defendants from using their share of the $1.8 billion in the drug. The agreement allows the defendants to pay an additional $7.2 billion to resolve this litigation.”
The case was brought in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) on behalf of the Class of patients, and AstraZeneca will pay $4.3 billion to settle the case.
